What is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a condition where children can see clearly up close but struggle to see far away. When myopia begins at a young age, it often progresses quickly as a child grows. Higher levels of myopia are linked to increased risks later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and permanent vision loss, as emphasized by the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (AAOMC).

Some free or low-cost strategies—such as spending more time outdoors, taking breaks from near work, and maintaining healthy visual habits—can help support eye health and may slow progression to a limited degree. However, research supported by the AAOMC shows that these measures alone are often not enough to adequately control myopia once it begins progressing.

That is why Fighting Myopia was created. Dr. Emil Martirosyan is deeply passionate about preventative eye care and dedicates his practice to individualized, evidence-based myopia management. Using FDA-approved treatments—including specialized contact lenses, prescription eye drops, or combination therapies—Dr. Emil works closely with families to create personalized care plans designed to slow myopia progression and protect long-term vision.

Early intervention matters. With the right guidance and treatment, myopia progression can be managed—helping children maintain healthier vision today and reducing serious risks in the future.
