Orthokeratolgy

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a groundbreaking, non-surgical treatment that helps manage myopia by gently reshaping the cornea (front surface of the eye) while you sleep. This allows you to enjoy clear, glasses-free vision throughout the day without the need for daytime contact lenses. Whether you

Ortho-K uses custom-designed hard contact lens retainers worn overnight. These lenses float on the tear film and apply gentle hydraulic pressure (not direct contact) to the cornea. This redistributes fluid in the epithelial cells, thinning the central cornea by just 5–10 microns (for reference, a human hair is about 70 microns thick). This reshaping effect is temporary and reversible, which means the lenses must be worn nightly to maintain clear vision.

Yes. Ortho-K lenses are FDA-approved and made of highly breathable materials that allow oxygen to reach the cornea. At Fighting Myopia, we customize each treatment and provide thorough follow-ups to ensure safety, comfort, and effectiveness. With proper care and hygiene, Ortho-K is a safe and reliable option for myopia management.

Ortho-K is ideal for...

  • Children and teens with progressive myopia
  • Patients with mild to moderate astigmatism
  • Adults seeking a non-surgical vision correction
  • Active individuals or kids who prefer life without glasses or daytime contacts

A consultation will help us determine if Ortho-K is the right fit for your or your child’s vision needs.

Most patients notice clearer vision after just one night, with full results within a few days to a week.

Yes. Because the reshaping is temporary, consistent nightly wear is necessary to maintain clear daytime vision.

Minor side effects can include:

  • Dry eyes (often manageable with drops)
  • Redness or discomfort (usually from improper lens fit; adjustments can fix this)
  • Infection risk, which is minimal with proper hygiene and care

Yes! Ortho-K has been shown to slow myopia progression by up to 50% in children. This helps reduce the long-term risks of severe eye conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

If you stop wearing your Ortho-K lenses, the cornea will gradually return to its original shape, and your vision will revert to its previous state. If you ever choose to discontinue Ortho-K, we’ll help you explore other options.
