The use of technology by children of all ages is rapidly increasing. Children and young adults tend to hold screens closer than books and print material. The prevalence of myopia in kids is increasing dramatically due to extended use of electronic devices and minimal time spent outdoors.
Myopia is an eye condition that causes blurry distance vision, often called "short-sightedness" or "nearsightedness". A person with myopia can see clearly up close – when reading a book or looking at a phone – but words and objects look fuzzy on a blackboard, on television or when driving. A pair of glasses can correct myopia, but glasses are only half of the story.
Myopia tends to run in families - if one or two parents are myopic, there is a higher chance that a child will develop myopia. Myopia is also highly environmental, meaning what children do in their daily lives can have a significant impact on developing myopia.
Myopia in kids tends to progress or get worse throughout childhood. As it progresses - their eyes grow too long. Higher levels of myopia are associated with higher eye disease risks in adulthood. If your child already wears glasses, you can do something to stop their vision from getting worse. If they don't wear glasses - you can still assess their risk of developing myopia.
Welcome to Fighting Myopia, your trusted partner in myopia management. We are dedicated to providing the latest, evidence-based solutions to help manage and control myopia (nearsightedness) in children. At our clinic, we focus on offering personalized care, utilizing advanced technologies, and working closely with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs. Myopia, if left unchecked, can progress rapidly, leading to high levels of nearsightedness that significantly increase the risk of severe eye conditions, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. By offering myopia management options, we can help slow or even halt this progression, giving children a better chance of maintaining healthier eyes in the future. Beyond the physical benefits, managing myopia also has psychological advantages - children who experience stable vision often have a greater sense of confidence and less anxiety about their eyesight. With myopia management, we also open up the possibility of more surgical options, such as LASIK, at an older age, providing the child with future flexibility. Ultimately, our goal is to improve their overall quality of life - helping them perform better academically, socially, and in activities that require clear vision, all while minimizing the risks associated with high myopia later in life.
Hello! I'm Dr. Emil. I became an optometrist because my passion is helping people see the beauty of the world around them. While I take pleasure in prescribing glasses and contact lenses, I realized that these solutions only address symptoms, but not the underlying issues. I decided to specialize in myopia management because I truly believe in the power of early intervention to prevent long-term vision problems.
A little about my education: I graduated from Temple University with B.S. in Biology and minor in Sociology of Health. I then earned a Master’s degree at Drexel University and received my Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from Salus University (formerly Pennsylvania College of Optometry). I did my internship in pediatrics at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia as part of my doctorate training. I'm certified in CRT, Euclid and Johnson & Johnson Acuvue Abiliti orthokeratology lenses, as well as soft MiSight 1-Day contact lenses for myopia control. I'm a member the of American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (AAOMC) and a Gas Permeable Lens Institute (GPLI). I'm constantly educating myself on latest in myopia management to help your child preserve their vision.
